Cakes and desserts have a long and interesting history that stretches back to ancient times. The very first cakes were far from the fluffy treats we know today. Evidence suggests the ancient Egyptians were some of the earliest bakers, creating flat, bread-like cakes sweetened with honey and flavored with nuts and spices. These early cakes were more like what we might consider cookies today. Other civilizations like the Greeks and Romans also had their own versions of sweet treats, with the Greeks even inventing a forerunner to cheesecake! The key turning point for cakes came in Europe during the mid-17th century.
